What is self-reflection? According to Yip (2006), â€Å"social work students are encouraged to undergo self-reflection. It is a process of self-analysis, self-evaluation, self-dialogue, and self-observation. Under appropriate conditions, social workers’ self-reflection can be very constructive, resulting in self-enhancement. However, under inappropriate conditions, social workers’ self-reflection in reflective practice can be destructive and create problems for their professional and self-development† (p. 777). Self-Reflection is a careful thought about your own behavior and beliefs (Merriam Webster dictionary, n.d.). As a social worker who has been in the field since 2010, I will reflect on†¦show more content†¦As a social worker, I must listen well, through reflecting back what my clients say and being occupied with each discussion so they know I comprehend them. In this field of work, I learned that great listening sets up trust and regard from the beginning, so clients feel good trusting in you. I will also need problem solving and negotiating skills, and good judgement. Organizing is necessary and a key to success in the social work profession. I know in order for my field placement goals to be fulfilled I need to have the ability to organize paperwork for profiles. I will also keep a log of items needed in the process of profile writing and assess needs of clients according to the importance. Social workers work with many different people and tolerance is needed to work with clients who have a different background than you. As a social worker, I must respect and be honest with clients, my field instructor, and other professionals. All these strengths listed are needed for me to build relationships and work effectively with people. The challenge I may encounter in the field is my tolerance level. I have a high tolerance but there are times when you are spread very thin when dealing with people who are combative and difficult. This is a challenge for me because although I am a social worker, I am still human.
